The doctors at Hope Zion Hospital are forced to deal with people from their past as Alex (Erica Durance), Charlie (Michael Shanks), and Joel (Daniel Gillies) take on the daunting task of operating on a malpractice lawyer known for suing every doctor in his path. Meanwhile, Zach (Ben Ayres) is tested when the last person he wants to treat comes into his E.R. and a Season 1 patient returns with some difficult insight for Charlie and Alex.
When the biggest malpractice lawyer in the country, known for only ever losing one case, ends up in the Hope Zion E.R., Alex (Erica Durance) takes on the unwanted and daunting task of operating on him. He’s a shark of a lawyer and on top of his game, so when complications arise while in surgery, Alex is forced to stop operating midway through. Charlie (Michael Shanks) and Joel (Daniel Gillies) step in and work with Alex in an elaborate surgery to try to save his life, and stay out of court. Charlie pulls through for everyone when the lawyer turns up as a Spirit and Charlie’s able to gain some crucial information to save him. Meanwhile, in the E.R. Zach (Ben Ayres) also has to deal with an unwanted patient, his ex-wife’s new husband. At first, he refuses to treat him, but it isn’t long before Zach has to put his feelings aside and treat him, and in doing so is able to let go and finally move on to the next chapter in his life. Likewise, Alex crosses paths with The Great Randall (guest star Peter Keleghan), the hypnotist from Season 1 when he’s admitted to the ward with pancreatitis, allowing Alex to finally give him a piece of her mind, as Randall in turn gives Charlie some heavy advice.

S02E05 “The Face of the Giant Panda”

Alex (Erica Durance) must become the unlikely advocate for a violent young prisoner brought in to Hope Zion Hospital, while Joel (Daniel Gillies) connects with a disfigured refugee and tries to convince Dr. Dana Kinney (Wendy Crewson) to come back to operate on him. Meanwhile, a spirit who is familiar to many Hope Zion doctors shows up in the morgue when Charlie (Michael Shanks) is about to do routine procedure.
Alex (Erica Durance) takes the lead as a violent young prisoner is rushed into Hope Zion Hospital. Unwilling to stereotype her patient, Alex gives her the benefit of the doubt and with Gavin’s (Kristopher Turner) help, they review her medical records and discover she’s been given an intense cocktail of drugs to make her compliant. When the drugs are flushed out of her, the prisoner’s true character comes through and Alex, Gavin, and Shahir (Huse Madhavji) are able to properly diagnose and treat her. Meanwhile, Joel (Daniel Gillies) steps out of Hope Zion to take Dr. Dana Kinney (Wendy Crewson) out for lunch in an attempt to lure her back to his surgical team for a special case. After much deliberation and persistence, she gives in to operating on a refugee with facial paralysis because of his heartbreaking story, but is hesitant to return to the hospital that passed her over for Chief of Surgery. Down in the morgue, Charlie (Michael Shanks) is about to harvest bones from a deceased donor and is surprised when the patient’s spirit is a familiar figure to the doctors at Hope Zion Hospital.

After a young, healthy, and hunky fireman dies suddenly at Hope Zion Hospital, Alex (Erica Durance) must take the stand at Hope Zion’s Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) Rounds to find out what went wrong and who is to blame. Meanwhile, Charlie (Michael Shanks) deals with a nervous aspiring Nun, and Joel (Daniel Gillies) has to decide if he can be the man that comes through for Sonja (guest star Erin Karpluk).
Alex (Erica Durance) takes the stand at Hope Zion Hospital’s Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) Rounds when it looks like she’s at fault for the tragic death of a young fireman at a hospital fundraiser. Through a series of flashbacks where more about the case is revealed, the blame shifts from doctor to doctor. The M&Ms are meant to be a learning tool for everyone, but Alex, Tom (K.C. Collins), and Maggie (Julia Taylor-Ross) know that it’s more than that – it’s assigning blame to who was at fault, in a surgery that cost a man his life. Meanwhile, Charlie and Zach (Ben Ayres) treat an aspiring Nun with an ankle fracture that turns serious when they stumble upon a potentially fatal allergy. While near-death, the Nun sees Charlie and finally gets the sign from above she was looking for. A busy Joel (Daniel Gillies) struggles to balance his workload as Chief with his growing commitment to Sonja (guest star Erin Karpluk) and must decide if he’s ready to step up to the plate.
